Did You Know, Week 7: Adult Literacy services in the Library? Try Reading Connections!

July 21, 2014

Were you wondering where “Did You Know” went?  It took a week’s vacation, but it’s back with several important topics.

The library is home to a great community resource that you may not know about--Reading Connections!  Reading Connections is an organization that serves all of Guilford County, and its mission is: “To provide and advocate for free, individualized adult literacy services to promote life changes for Guilford County residents and surrounding communities.”

Reading Connections got its start with its location in Greensboro, but the High Point Public Library has been the home of their High Point operation since 2010.  From this space, Reading Connections is able to provide free adult literacy classes and individual tutoring for residents of the Greater High Point
community.  Their classes focus on skills such as basic adult literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages, computer literacy, and much more.

The organization has a small staff that works out of the library, but they rely on community volunteers as tutors and teachers.  Volunteers do not need to have prior teaching experience, since Reading Connections provides all the tutor training and materials.

If you’d like more information about the classes or becoming a tutor, contact the Reading Connections Office at 884-7323, visit their website: http://www.readingconnections.org/, or “Like” them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/readingconnections.

This topic was one of several mentioned in the comments of the library technology survey we had in April.  We’ll be offering explanations on topics like this one over the next several weeks. To see the complete results of this survey, click here.
